Spring Out of Winter with Healthy Curls

Happy spring! Yes, lovelies, it’s FINALLY time to shake off those winter blues!! As we head into warmer weather, we wanted to share some tips to help you maintain healthy, bomb-a** curls allll season long.

1. Deep Conditioning

If you want soft, bouncy and healthy curls, deep conditioning is a good habit to include as a regular part of your self-care routine. How often you should be doing it depends on your hair type and overall health of your hair. But if one thing is for sure, deep conditioning regularly is essential to replacing moisture lost during the dry winter season.

If you’re new to this, you’re probably wondering where to start. From the hair care aisle to DIY home recipes, there are tons of options out there; it doesn’t have to be complicated!

Just apply it after you shampoo, condition, and detangle your hair, leave it on for 5-15 minutes while you exfoliate or shave, and then rinse it out. That's it!

2. The Drying Process

Sometimes a change in season means a change in our wash ’n go routines. Whereas leaving the house and letting your hair air dry is a huge no-no in the winter, spring is the perfect time to relax and let your curls dry naturally. Since wet hair isn’t as pliable and prone to breakage when it’s warm outside, this is the perfect time to give your hair a break from any and all heat. For faster drying, try plopping! It’s an easy, no-heat technique that can help shorten your drying time while adding volume and definition.

3. Shield Your Hair From the Elements

We all know that sunscreen is KEY in warmer months, but how often do we think about sun damage to our hair?? The sun can have a serious effect on the health of your curls! Just like your skin can get burned, extensive exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can harm your hair, causing split ends, frizz, dryness, and discoloration.

Our solution? If you can’t stay in the shade, wrap your favorite scarf around the crown of your head or find a hat to do the same. If on any given day you’ve exposed your curls to too much sun, do an extra deep conditioning treatment to help your curls recover from any damage!

4. Protective Styles

First of all, what is a protective style? Any time you wear your hair with your ends tucked away you’re wearing a protective style. These styles help to retain length and moisture because it minimizes washing and styling and reduces breakage caused by over-manipulation. There are so many different types of protective styles ranging in complexity, these include but aren’t limited to: buns, twists, braids, extensions and wigs. These styles not only protect your hair but they can also help to reduce the amount of time and energy you spend styling and caring for it (not to mention the variety of different looks you can slaaay).

5. Hair Cuts

Whether it’s trying to find a salon that actually knows how to cut curly hair or just trying our best to reach our length goals, the whole process of getting a haircut can be pretty daunting. But for the health of your hair, (and to give your curls a fighting chance against the elements!), it is a good idea to rid yourself of any dry, brittle or split ends. We always suggest you seek out a good curl specialist salon in your area, but if you’re feeling brave, you could always buy a pair of hair cutting shears and try to trim/dust your own hair. Some curlies prefer the search and destroy method, where they examine the ends of their hair and trim off any strands with fairy knots or broken and split ends.

As we've said before, curly hair is all about experimentation and having fun! This stands for your deep conditioning regimen too. There are no rules, and you need to learn to "listen" to your hair. When it is extra parched and begging for hydration, give it some! As a general rule, deep conditioning every other week or even once a month in the spring and summer months seems to work for most curlies.
