How to Refresh Hair: Your Guide to Gorgeous Day Two (And Three and Four) Curls

Everything you need to know about how to refresh curls. Whether want to extend your time between washes (who doesn't?) or need to get rid of frizzy second day curls once and for all, this guide is for you.

If you're a curly girl (hi, welcome!) then you obviously know how much time, energy and effort goes into washing, moisturizing, and styling your curls. (Hint: a lot.) So we get how frustrating it can be if the results of your wash and style don't last as long as you'd like. That's why we've just launched a brand new bundle that is focused on saving time—something we could all use a bit more of.

Enter: our Wash·Style·Refresh Kit.

Featuring the best-selling LUS (Love Ur Self) 3-Step System, which is customized for different curl types, and our beloved Infinity Spray Bottle (a continuous spray water bottle that's the perfect companion to our All-In-One), the Wash·Style·Refresh Kit is the ultimate curl reviver, preventing frizzy second day curls without having to repeat your wash day all over again. The secret to nailing it? Understanding that every refresh routine is unique, so you have to be ready to experiment with different techniques.

To help you get started, we’ve provided everything you need to know about how to refresh curls using our Wash·Style·Refresh Kit.

PROBLEM: MY HAIR GETS STRINGY AND CRUNCHY WHEN I ADD MORE PRODUCT THE NEXT DAY

Curls thrive when they receive adequate amounts of water and moisture. That’s why we designed our products to be water-activated, which means that the nourishing, effective ingredients in our formulations work best when they interact with water. It's the reason we recommend using our All-In-One styler on wet (not just damp) hair.

If you’re experiencing the dreaded crunch in your day two curls, you may have used too much All-In-One. While it is an excellent second day hair product (remember: water-activated!), for some curl types (especially finer hair and type 2 curls) simply spritzing some water throughout your hair with our Infinity Spray Bottle is enough to reinvigorate your curls. But if find that you need a bit more styler, we recommend using a small amount of All-In-One diluted with water, to give second day hair some volume.

PROBLEM: ADDING WATER TO MY HAIR IS RUINING THE DEFINITION OF MY CURLS

The amount of water you need to refresh your curls depends entirely on your unique texture and hair type. If water makes your hair frizz, you may need to scale back on the amount you’re using and adjust how you reapply water to your second-day curls. One thing that we (and more importantly, LUS (Love Ur Self) fans and curlies) love about our Infinity Spray Bottle is that it dispenses a light, ultra-fine mist rather than water droplets, which makes a massive difference in preventing frizzy second day curls when attempting to give your hair a refresh.

Also, pay attention to what your hands are doing. (Uh, what?)

For most curl types, over-manipulating your hair can lead to less-defined, frizzy second day curls. If this happens to you, avoid raking through your hair with your fingers when you’re refreshing in the morning. Instead, stick to techniques like scrunching, or the praying-hands method (more on that in the video below!) for smoothing away frizz and reforming curl clumps for the defined curls you know and love.

PROBLEM: MY HAIR IS MESSY WHEN I WAKE UP

We get it: figuring out how to refresh curls in the morning is a delicate song and dance. But there are a few steps you can add to your bedtime routine to help start the morning off right.

Set the stage for great second day hair by sleeping on the LUS (Love Ur Self) Satin Scarf to reduce unwanted frizz, friction and breakage. If your hair has a tendency to misbehave at night (#relatable), try pulling it up into a high, loose ponytail (adorably referred to as a “pineapple”) to help keep everything in check.

PROBLEM: MY SECOND (AND THIRD AND FOURTH) DAY CURLS LOOK A LITTLE DULL

As we go through our regular routine, our hair can be robbed of its natural lustre, especially when we lay our heads down for the night. Using oil on your curls can help to add shine while also smoothing frizz and flyaways.

If you haven't yet been acquainted with the LUS (Love Ur Self) Elixir Oil, allow us to introduce you to this do-it-all workhorse of a product. Great for nourishing and soothing dryness and damage, it's formulated with 7 pure oils and vitamin E, so it's jam-packed with good-for-you nutrients with endless benefits. Bonus: it can also be used on skin and nails.

PROBLEM:MY HAIR HAS GOTTEN TOO GREASY

Then wash it! The first step to growing healthy hair is listening to your curls. There are no hard and fast rules for how long you should make your wash cycle. You’ve got to do what’s best for your hair and scalp. What does that mean? Glad you asked! Read up on our ultimate guide to scalp care. Some curly girls can’t get past day one or day two hair—and that’s okay! No one wants to deal with greasy or weighed down hair for several days, so go ‘head and wash your hair, girl!
